Housing and feeding are crucial things to pay attention to during weaning. Feeding young piglets requires specific feeding systems and management techniques. Recent change in feeding systems now help the pig farmer to better control post weaning stress and loss in daily gain.
Here are some things to note about pig nutrition:
1. Water is very important
For pigs to breed well, you must have a reliable supply of clean, cool water available. Water, if not taken in appropriate quantity can lead to serious loss in productivity, disease and even mortality. Young, growing pig requires up to 10 litres of water a day while an adult pig can drink 25l to 50l a day.
To keep up to 20 pigs, you need 2 500l tank or larger. Keep at least two days’ water reserved just in case something goes wrong with the pump and repairs have to be made.
2. Liquid feeding / dry feeding in pig production
Each of these systems can support piglet growth; however, the conditions on a farm, as well as the specific feed components are decisive factors of whether a liquid feeding or dry feeding system is to be installed. The important key to successful growth rate is a pig feeding system which is carefully adapted into respective farms.
3. A whole range of feed
Pigs are omnivores , meaning that they will eat a whole range of foods. If you are mixing your own feed to produce a well-balanced diet, a range of other ingredients should be included in smaller quantities (e.g. meat meal, fishmeal, soybean meal, blood meal, tallow, minerals, vitamins, salt, limestone).
Pig diets can also be supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables. However, you must be certain that the feedstuff cannot be classified as swill as Swill feeding is illegal.
4. Physiological state of the pig
A pregnant sow’s energy and nutritional requirements will be quite different to a sow that is feeding piglets, or a young pig that is growing at a fast pace.
There are a range of manufactured complete feeds available from stockfeeders formulated to meet the requirements of different types of pigs. Therefore, failing to match the composition of diets with actual requirements of the pig not only affects the pig’s, health and well being but also its growth, reproduction and meat production.
